CWS Impact Garage Doors: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CWS-compatible impact garage doors across San Antonio, with most replacements running $1,850 to $4,400 installed depending on door width, panel design, and whether we’re reusing your existing track or replacing it. Most failures we see involve failed springs, bent tracks from storm debris, or delaminated panels that lost their structural rating after years of Texas sun and hail. You’ll usually notice the problem first as a door that won’t open smoothly, sags visibly when halfway up, or leaves a gap along the bottom seal.
If you own a CWS impact-rated garage door and something feels off with the way it opens, closes, or seals, call us at (903) 488-7019. We’ll come out, identify what’s failing, and give you a written price before any work starts.
Which CWS Models This Applies To
CWS builds impact garage doors under a few distinct series lines, and parts don’t always cross between them. The most common lines we service in San Antonio are the CWS WindCode series (their current impact-rated residential line) and the older CWS Classic and Estate models that predate some of the current hardware revisions. If you installed the door after 2015, there’s a good chance it’s a WindCode unit, but the only reliable way to know is to check the factory sticker on the inside of the door panel, usually near the bottom edge or on the left stile. Look for the model number and a four-digit date code.
The compatibility gotcha we see most often: CWS changed their spring bracket spacing on WindCode doors starting in 2021, so springs and bearing plates from a 2018 model won’t always seat correctly on a newer header. This is the kind of thing that turns a quick parts swap into a re-drilled header if you buy the part blind online. We’d rather pull the panel sticker, match it to the right revision, and order the correct OEM or a proven aftermarket equivalent that’s actually rated for impact door loads, not whatever a generic reseller recommends. CWS-branded hardware is the safest route for anything involving springs, rollers, or brackets; for struts and reinforcement bars, we’ve had good results with aftermarket aluminum that meets Miami-Dade impact specs.
Juniper Windows San Antonio is an independent service provider, not affiliated with CWS. That’s worth saying plainly: we service these doors because we’ve installed and repaired enough of them to know them well, not because a manufacturer sent us.
Signs Your CWS Impact Garage Doors Is Failing
- The door opens unevenly, with one side lagging. This usually means a failing torsion spring or a stretched cable. CWS impact doors are heavier than standard residential doors, so that spring is under more load than a typical garage door spring, and in San Antonio heat, the coils fatigue faster than they do in mild climates.
- You hear a sharp snap and the door either slams or won’t move. That’s a broken spring, and it happens without much warning. Impact-rated doors hold more tension because of the added glass reinforcement and steel framing, which is why this repair isn’t a weekend job for a homeowner with a socket set.
- The door sags when it’s parked halfway up, and you can see the panel flexing. CWS panels carry their impact rating only when the internal steel bracing is intact. Once a strut cracks or a stile bends, the panel loses stiffness and you’re seeing the early stage of a structural problem, not just an alignment issue.
- You hear grinding or popping from the rollers when the door moves. Roller bearings wear out, but on CWS doors, a seized roller can also gouge the track, and a bent track then drags across the rollers and accelerates the wear. It’s a chain reaction, and in humid San Antonio summers, surface rust on the track makes it worse.
- Daylight shows under the bottom seal even after you adjust the travel limit. This can be a worn bottom rubber, but on impact doors, it’s often a sign the door itself has settled out of square, usually from a damaged hinge or a shifted track bracket. A door that doesn’t seal is also a door that no longer protects the way it was designed to.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Antonio, most CWS impact garage door replacements fall between $1,850 and $4,400 installed. That range covers single and double doors on standard residential track. Here’s the breakdown we give homeowners before we ever pick up a wrench:
- Single-car CWS impact door, installed: $1,850 to $2,600
- Double-car CWS impact door, installed: $2,800 to $4,400
- Spring replacement (both springs, matched pair): $240 to $420
- Track replacement, per side: $180 to $350
- Strut or reinforcement bar replacement: $90 to $220 per bar
- Roller replacement (full set): $85 to $150
Labor is included in every number above, and so is haul-away of the old door or parts. What drives the range on a full door is panel design (flush steel is cheaper than carriage-house styling with glazing), whether the existing track is serviceable, and whether we need to pull a permit for the opening. We write the total price before work starts, and it doesn’t change unless we open the wall and find something no one could have seen from the outside, which we’ll show you photos of before we proceed. Every installation and repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: parts and labor, in writing, for a full year. If a repair fails, the second visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be blunt about the dangerous part: CWS impact garage door springs are high-tension components that can seriously injure or kill you if they release under load. We don’t give homeowners step-by-step spring replacement instructions, and we don’t recommend trying it with a tutorial and a pair of vise grips. The torsion these springs hold is under enough pressure to snap a wrench out of your hand. That’s not a warning to upsell you; it’s the reality of a door that weighs over 200 pounds in the case of a double-wide impact unit.
What you can safely do is this: inspect the rollers and track for visible cracks or rust, check the weather seal for tears, and note whether the door balances when disconnected from the opener (use the red release handle, and be ready for the door to move). If it doesn’t balance, or you see cracks in a spring, a stile, or a strut, call us at (903) 488-7019. We carry CWS-compatible springs, rollers, hinges, and struts on the truck for most San Antonio service calls, so we can usually diagnose and fix the problem in one visit.
FAQs
Plan on 15 to 25 years for the door panels themselves, with springs lasting 7 to 10 years on average in Texas heat. San Antonio’s combination of intense sun, hail, and humidity ages the finish and weather seals faster than coastal climates, so plan on replacing bottom rubber and checking spring tension every five years. Call (903) 488-7019 if your door is over 15 years old and showing signs of sag; a full inspection costs nothing.
Yes, in most cases. Bent tracks, broken springs, worn rollers, and cracked struts are all repairable parts, and we stock the common hardware. What’s rarely worth repairing is a panel that has delaminated or lost impact rating, which happens when water gets behind the outer steel skin and the laminated core separates. Once that rating is gone, the door isn’t doing its job, and you’re looking at replacement. We’ll tell you straight whether repair or replacement makes more financial sense. Call (903) 488-7019 for a written assessment.
A single-door replacement on existing, serviceable track takes us about four to six hours, including haul-away and a full safety check on the opener. If we’re replacing track, or the opening needs reframing, expect a full day. Double doors can run eight hours. We’ll give you a realistic timeline in writing before we start, and we’ll show up when we say we will.
We stock the most-failed CWS hardware on our trucks: springs, rollers, hinges, struts, and weather seals. For door panels or full replacements, we order directly from our supplier network and typically have the door in hand within five to ten business days. If we’re also servicing our other stocked lines (PGT, CGI, ES Windows), we can usually pull from existing inventory faster.
If the numbers don’t make sense on paper, they won’t make sense on your wall either. Sean Mackey built Juniper Windows San Antonio on that principle after two decades of installing and repairing impact-rated windows and doors across Texas and Southern California. Every CWS door we install or repair gets a written price first, a live arrival time you can track, and photo proof of the work when we’re done.
