CWS Window Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

CWS window installation in San Antonio typically runs $180 – $340 per window when we’re swapping a failed unit into an existing frame, and $450 – $900 per window for a full-frame replacement that includes new flashing and trim. We keep common CWS-compatible hardware, balances, and sashes in stock and can usually turn a single-unit job around in one visit. Most San Antonio homeowners discover their CWS window has failed the same way: a sash that won’t stay up, a crank that spins without moving the vent, or condensation that’s suddenly visible between the glass panes.

Call (903) 488-7019

We’re an independent San Antonio window company, not a CWS dealer or affiliate. That matters because we don’t have to push a factory replacement when a smarter upgrade exists. Sean Mackey, our owner, has been installing and servicing window systems in San Antonio for more than a decade, and he’ll tell you straight what’s worth replacing versus what’s worth rethinking.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS built several lines over the years, and the parts are not interchangeable across all of them. In San Antonio homes we most often see CWS single-hung and horizontal slider models from the 2000s and 2010s, along with a smaller number of casement and awning units. The quickest way to identify yours is to open the sash and look for a silver or white sticker on the frame edge, usually near the top corner. It’ll have a series code, a manufacturing date, and sometimes a size callout like SH-3040.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners run into: CWS balance springs are sized by window weight and height, and two windows that look identical from the outside can take different balances if one has thicker glass or a laminated pane. We measure the old balance’s length and weight rating before ordering, because a guess gets you a window that either slams shut or won’t lock. For most CWS models, a quality aftermarket balance from a Texas distributor performs identically to the OEM part at roughly half the cost, and we’re comfortable putting our 365-day warranty behind that choice. For sashes and glass units, we always recommend matching the original CWS specifications so the sightlines and U-factor stay consistent. That matters in a San Antonio summer: a mismatched glass package can turn one bedroom into the hottest room in the house.

Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing

  • The sash drops hard when you lift it. The balance spring or block-and-tackle assembly inside the jamb has lost tension. This is the most common failure we see in San Antonio, where aluminum springs fatigue faster in heat cycles.
  • You can see fog between the two panes of glass. The seal around the insulated glass unit (IGU) has failed, letting moisture in. Once you see persistent fog, the argon or krypton gas is gone and the U-factor advantage is lost; the glass unit gets replaced, not the whole window.
  • The crank turns but the vent doesn’t move. On CWS casements, the operator gear or the connecting arm has stripped. This is a hardware swap: new operator, new track, same window.
  • You feel air moving around the closed sash. The weatherstripping or the pile seal along the bottom rail has compressed or pulled loose. In humid San Antonio conditions, this is also how you get mildew forming along the sill.
  • The window locks but leaves a visible gap at the meeting rail. The sash has racked or the shims behind the frame have settled. This needs the window pulled and reset, not just a new latch.

If the numbers don’t make sense on paper, they won’t make sense on your wall either. Sean Mackey uses that line when he’s showing a homeowner why two “identical” window quotes are $1,500 apart, and it applies to repair decisions the same way.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what CWS window installation actually costs in San Antonio, installed by our crew:

  • Balance or spring replacement: $95 – $175 per window, including both balances for single-hungs.
  • Crank operator replacement: $140 – $220 per window, including new arm and hardware.
  • Weatherstripping and seal replacement: $90 – $160 per window.
  • Insulated glass unit swap: $220 – $380 per sash, depending on glass size and Low-E coating.
  • Full sash replacement: $300 – $500 per sash, matched to your CWS frame dimensions.
  • Complete window replacement (frame, trim, install): $450 – $900 per opening, fixed before we start, in writing.

The range comes down to window size, glass package (clear, Low-E, laminated, tinted), and whether we’re working on a ground-floor slider or a second-story unit requiring ladder work. Every quote includes the part, the labor, disposal of the old component, and our fit-and-finish check. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers parts and labor, in writing, for a full year after the job.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the sticker on your frame for a series code and measure the visible glass. That’s useful info to have ready when you call. What we don’t recommend is pulling a balance spring or crank mechanism out on your own: these parts are under tension, and a spring that lets go inside a vinyl jamb can tear up the track or take a slice out of your hand.

For glass unit swaps, the risk is smaller but the details matter: the replacement IGU has to be sized to the exact 1/8-inch of your CWS frame, or you’ll end up with a window that leaks air and voids any chance of a warranty. In San Antonio’s heat, a poorly seated glass unit will fog within a season. If the symptom is a simple issue like a loose handle or debris in the track, we’ll walk you through it on the phone at (903) 488-7019 and you won’t owe us a dollar. If it’s a balance, an operator, or a fogged IGU, book the visit and we’ll have the right part on the truck.
